I purchased this Guitar brand new in 2001 from a local music store in St.Paul Minn. Because I play in a R&B Band, I've been using my Strat for the past 10 years. Thus my PRS has been in storage all that time. With the tags still on it. I ordered the guitar from the factory in 2000. PRS called me and said, it would take a year to find the Artist Grade Top I was looking for. Because I wasn't in any hurry, I said that was fine. It was well worth the wait. 'Its' spectacular!
The wide, thin neck is wonderful! Probably the finest I've ever played, or likely to play. Marvellous low, fast action. This fine instrument weighs only 7 pounds 2 oz. Through my Marshall's tube amp, this instrument sounds incredibly warm, especially through the bridge pickup. The P/U's on this model are PRS Dragon II's, and although I'd never had any past experience with them, I've grown to love their sound very quickly. Although others have said that they dislike the rotary p/u selector, I for one like it. It's very positive, and noise free.
It 's wiring configuration gives the guitar a very wide range of tones. It responds very well to delicate finger-style as well as the usual over-driven tones many players desire. Even standard PRS models are beautiful instruments, but with this Artist Grade top, gold hardware and a deep Black Cherry finish, it takes my breath away each time I open the case! The Brazilian fretboard and headstock are exquisite. I love it, and that's saying something after 36 years of playing, and trying just about everything on the market! It's everything the Les Paul aspires to be, only better.
From the factory, there was a clear coat bubble on the neck that chipped off. (see picture) That's the only defect on the guitar. Of course the guitar is MINT!
